Prep notebook: News and notes about Saturday's games
Here's an assortment of news and notes about this weekend's state high school basketball championship games, focusing mainly on the games at N.C. State's Reynolds Coliseum where Terry Sanford's boys and East Bladen's girls will be in action.
Time Warner Cable will again telecast all eight championship games Saturday.
The 4-A girls' game between Green Hope and Matthews Butler and the 4-A boys' game between Terry Sanford and Mooresville Lake Norman will both be shown live on News 14 Carolina. The girls' game is at 5 p.m., followed by the boys' contest at 7:30.
All of the championship games will be streamed live at Time Warner's News14.com. They will also be available for viewing at Time Warner's Cable on Demand (Channel 1234) by Tuesday at the latest.
Tickets are available at Terry Sanford in the main office through Friday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $9 in advance and $10 Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.
One ticket is good for admission to all four games being played at Reynolds, but fans cannot leave and re-enter the facility on one ticket.
For the first time in the postseason, Terry Sanford will wear its blue road uniforms in Saturday's game. All of the East teams are the visitors for Saturday's game and must wear their road uniforms.
Terry Sanford fans will sit in the East and West stands at Reynolds, along with the North end zone seats.
The lone exception to this is the seats directly behind each team bench, which are reserved for the fans of that school.
There will be free parking in the parking deck located beside Reynolds Coliseum.
As always, fans are reminded that noisemakers, banners, streamers, body paint, placards and signs are not allowed in the arena. Spectators must also stay off the playing floor at all times.
The top individual awards that will be handed out at the end of each championship game have been given new names.
The Most Valuable Player award for each of the girls' title games has been named in memory of the late Kay Yow, longtime women's basketball coach at N.C. State, who died last year after a long battle with breast cancer.
The MVP award for the boys' games has been named in honor of Charlie Adams. Adams stepped down earlier this year as executive director of the N.C. High School Athletic Association after working with the organization for over 40 years.
Wrestling
Former Jack Britt High School wrestler Jordan Alfaro earned NCAA Division III All-American honors this past weekend in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Alfaro is a junior competing in the 125-pound weight class at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He entered the tournament unseeded and lost his first match to Coe College's top-seeded Clayton Rush, who went on to take the championship.
Alfaro fought back in the consolation bracket to place eighth and earn All-American honors. Along the way, he upset the No. 6 and No. 8 seeds. His 5-4 win over Tyler Marlow of Brockport State clinched All-American honors.
