Prep notebook: Private school players honored

None of the Cape Fear region's private schools brought back a state title in basketball this season, but a number of players from region teams were honored with selection to the various N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association all-state teams.

Northwood Temple Academy's Erika Miller, a senior, was named to the 1-A girls' team.

Trinity Christian had two players, seniors Damontre Harris and Damien Steadman, chosen to the 1-A boys' team. Also picked was Luke Cothron, senior from Flora Macdonald Academy.

Making the 2-A girls' team were sophomore Hillary Summers of Village Christian and senior Tenika Neely of Fayetteville Christian.

Chosen to the 2-A boys' team were senior Kyree Bethel of Fayetteville Christian and senior Zack Richardson of Fayetteville Academy.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Fayetteville Observer's All-Cape Fear region basketball team.

Only coaches and athletic directors are eligible to submit nominations.

To nominate a player, send an e-mail to vaughane@fayobserver.com, no faxes or voicemail nominations please.

The nomination should include the player's name, position, class and height, along with any statistics from the 2009-10 season. Please include any awards or honors the player received during the year.

Nominations should be sent in no later than Tuesday.

The team will be announced later this month after all Cape Fear region teams have completed competition in the state playoffs.

Spectators planning to attend any of the Eastern Regional basketball games in Greenville this week are reminded of a few things.

Tickets will be $9 at the gate at both East Carolina's Minges Coliseum and J.H. Rose High School. The cost of the ticket includes a $1 surcharge for the N.C. High School Athletic Association Endowment.

Fans are not allowed to wear body paint of any kind, in any amount, including small designs on the face, hands or arms.

Any fan who tries to enter wearing body paint will be asked to remove it. Fans who put body paint on after entering either arena will be asked to leave.

All noisemaking devices are prohibited at all NCHSAA basketball games. The lone exception is non-electric hand-held megaphones, which may only be used by the cheerleaders.

Fans are also prohibited from hanging signs or banners in either arena.

Regional champions advance to the state championship games, which are scheduled Saturday, March 13.

The 2-A and 4-A title games for boys and girls will be played at N.C. State's Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.

The 1-A and 3-A title games will be at the Dean Smith Center at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
