Regional basketball pairings released

Terry Sanford's boys will take on Wilmington New Hanover and Westover's girls will face Havelock in opening round games this week in the Eastern Regional basketball tournament in Greenville.

Terry Sanford (29-0) meets New Hanover (20-7) in the 7 p.m. game Friday at East Carolina's Minges Coliseum. The other semifinal game in the 4-A boys' regional will have Durham Riverside (25-3) meeting Raleigh Millbrook (24-4) at 8:30 p.m.

Terry Sanford coach Bill Boyette said he doesn't know much about New Hanover. "I've heard they have two big kids and are pretty strong inside,'' Boyette said. "Their guards are athletic.''

New Hanover has already played two of Terry Sanford's Mid-South 4-A rivals this year, Jack Britt and Pine Forest.

Westover drew the second semifinal game in the 3-A girls' regional. The Wolverines (21-5) take on Havelock (25-5) in an 8:30 p.m. game Wednesday at J.H. Rose High School.

Westover actually got a break by not drawing Winterville South Central (26-4) for its first-round game. South Central is almost a home team as it's located just a few miles from Greenville in Pitt County.

South Central takes on Westover's Cape Fear Valley 3-A rival, Union Pines (22-6), in the 7 p.m. game at Rose.

Attempts to reach Westover coach Gene Arrington and assistant coach Myeesha Hockaday for comment Saturday were unsuccessful.

All regional championship games are scheduled Saturday. If Terry Sanford's boys advance, they would face the Riverside-Millbrook winner at 5 p.m.

The 3-A girls' final will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose.

Regional champions advance to the state title games Saturday, March 13.

The 1-A and 3-A title games will be played at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. The 2-A and 4-A title games will be at Reynolds Coliseum on the N.C. State campus in Raleigh.
