Tonight's prep basketball breakdown
BOYS
Big game
Southern Lee (12-7, 8-1 Cape Fear Valley) at Douglas Byrd (9-10, 5-4)
With the Cavaliers battling Westover for first place in the Cape Fear Valley, the Eagles will try and help their crosstown rivals out. This will be Byrd's second of back-to-back games against the top teams in the conference. The Eagles fell 62-44 to the Wolverines on Wednesday, getting 14 points from J.R. Britton and 11 from Jay Whitfield.
Player watch
Jack Britt's Daniel Camps
Averaging only 5.8 points per game this season, Camps exploded for a game-high 21 as the Buccaneers beat rival South View 73-58 on Wednesday. Britt (11-10, 6-3 Mid-South) might need another big performance like that when it travels to E.E. Smith tonight (5-12, 3-6). The Golden Bulls will be fighting to stay in the postseason picture.
Matchup alert
Cape Fear (9-11, 3-6 Mid-South) at Seventy-First (14-6, 4-5)
The Falcons need a win to keep the Colts and E.E. Smith from thinking they might be able to steal the fourth and final postseason spot in the Mid-South. Even with a short bench, Cape Fear held close in a 72-61 Jan. 8 loss on Leon Brock Court. Seventy-First needed 41 points from Marquis Hines (21 points) and Preston Ross (20) to win that game.
GIRLS
Big game
Overhills (16-3, 7-2 Cape Fear Valley) at Westover (13-4, 7-1)
With three teams with only two conference losses right behind them in the standings, the Wolverines would like to get some breathing room against the Jaguars today. Overhills has beat both E.E. Smith (58-56 on Dec. 4) and Westover (65-63 on Jan. 8) this season. But a 72-65 loss to Western Harnett and 65-56 setback to Union Pines make this game crucial for the Jaguars.
Player watch
Pine Forest's Ashley Kizzie
The 5-foot-7 senior guard poured in 20 points to help the Trojans (4-16, 2-7 Mid-South) upset Jack Britt 51-42 on Tuesday. Averaging 13.5 points per game, she will need another big game to help Pine Forest pull another surprise victory when South View visits tonight. The Tigers are 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the conference after pounding Britt 62-35 Wednesday.
Matchup alert
Jack Britt (12-8, 4-5 Mid-South) at E.E. Smith (15-1, 8-0)
This has been a rough week for the Buccaneers. They lost 51-42 against Pine Forest on Tuesday - the Trojans' fourth win of the season - and followed that up with a 62-35 setback against rival South View on Wednesday. Now Britt is in danger of going 0-3 this week when it visits conference leader E.E. Smith tonight.
