South View girls top Jack Britt in Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

If the saying "defense wins championships" holds any meaning come playoff time, South View will be looking pretty good with performances like this.

Ciara Morris and Rachel Temple scored 19 points each as the Tigers used a stifling defense to defeat Jack Britt 62-35 in the 2nd Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at South View. South View (15-5) held Jack Britt to 29 percent from the field and forced 21 turnovers.

Of course, the game took a backseat to the importance of cancer awareness. Fans of both squads participated in half-court contests during halftime, bought raffle tickets, or simply gave money. Both coaches were on the sideline wearing sneakers and pink shirts. As far as the players, Jack Britt sported pink shirts for warm-up apparel, while South View wore pink socks during the game.

The Bucs (13-7) held a 5-4 lead early in the first quarter, but the Tigers went on a 10-0 run, highlighted by 7 points from Morris. South View lead 18-7 deficit at the end of the first period and stretched the lead to 30-15 at halftime, despite shooting only 33 percent from the field. The Tigers, however, held Jack Britt to 28 percent shooting and took 11 more shots with a stronger presence on the offensive boards.

"We had to play hard and keep the intensity on defense," Morris stated.

"We played very good defense," South View coach Brent Barker added. "I was worried about our depth (initially), but we were able to stay out of foul trouble (as well)."

Jack Britt went on a mini-run after halftime, scoring the first six points of the third quarter. The crowd became a bit restless after a Bria Jones 3-pointer cut the lead down to 30-21.

South View's offense finally woke up, going on an 18-0 run, holding Jack Britt scoreless over a four-minute stretch and pushing the lead up to 48-21. The run was highlighted by two Ariel Wright 3-pointers and seven points from Temple, who scored 15 of her 19 in the last two quarters. Overall, the Tigers shot 59 percent in the second half and made all five of their 3-point attempts.

"You hope that around this time of the year, your veterans can come together and take care of business (on the court)," Barker said. "This game was a lot closer than the score had indicated."

Ariel Wright added 12 points for the Tigers, hitting four of six from downtown. For Jack Britt, Caitlin Sandy scored a team-high 14 and was the only Buccaneer to hit half of her shot attempts.
