REGION ROUNDUP: Pinecrest holds off Purnell Swett rally

 

SOUTHERN PINES - Time ran out on Purnell Swett's spirited comeback.

Pinecrest stuffed the Rams on a running play from 3 yards out with 6 seconds remaining, securing a 22-20 Southeastern victory Friday. Purnell Swett failed to get set and spike the ball before the clock ran out.

The Rams were attempting to rally from a 22-12 deficit with 4 minutes remaining. Pinecrest used a 66-yard touchdown run from Rapheal Alston and a 59-yard scoring scamper from Bret Toomer to build the big lead.

The Patriots improve to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in conference with the victory. Purnell Swett falls to 7-2 overall and 1-2 in the Southeastern 4-A Conference.

Fairmont 26, Red Springs 0 - In Fairmont, Lonnie Nealy ran for a pair of touchdowns as the Golden Tornadoes (2-6, 2-1 Three Rivers 2-A/1-A) kept Red Springs (0-8, 0-3) winless.

Nealy had 11 carries for 141 yards to lead Fairmont.

Harnett Central 38, Smithfield-Selma 7 - In Angier, Brian Taylor threw two touchdown passes, kicked a field goal and booted five extra points for the undefeated Trojans (9-0, 5-0 Greater Neuse River 4-A).

Taylor completed 13 of 17 passes for 244 yards.

East Bladen 27, South Columbus 14 - In Tabor City, A.J. McKoy had 11 carries for 157 yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles improved to 9-0 overall, 4-0 in the Waccamaw 3-A/2-A Conference.

Brian Riggins scored both TDs for South Columbus (4-5, 1-3).

Whiteville 30, West Bladen 0 - In Bladenboro, the Wolfpack (6-2, 3-1 Waccamaw 3-A/2-A) shut out hapless West Bladen (2-6, 0-5) in a soggy contest.

Trinity Christian 62, Lawrence Academy 0 - The Crusaders (9-0) extended their NCISAA record winning streak with a 35th consecutive victory.

Trinity's Chris Zavala scored on offense, defense and special teams with a 10-yard TD run, a 20-yard fumble recovery and a 60-yard kickoff return.

Harrells Christian 54, Fayetteville Christian 0 - Traymon Evans starred in Harrells Christian's rout with 198 yards and four touchdowns.
